Position Title: Communications Assistant
Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Communications
Summary: Support the district’s internal and external communication strategies by creating and implementing district communication initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Support the district’s Executive Director of Communications with planning, implementing, and executing internal and external communication efforts.
  • Create compelling and engaging content for various channels including website, social media, newsletters, press releases and other platforms.
  • Help to identify high profile concepts, coordinate and capture photos and video to accompany stories, and ensure content meets established communication goals.
  • Create, implement, and optimize the agency’s communications campaigns on appropriate social media platforms to ensure the agency is maximizing promotional and awareness opportunities in social and new media.
  • Help district staff respond to inquiries from staff and the public.
  • Capture district staff and district activities through still photos, video, and through written storytelling.
  • Support and attend district, staff and community special events including but not limited to LION Learning, receptions, ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, and open houses.
  • Support internal in-service training for staff on communication best practices.
  • Update district website and social media channels.
  • Track projects, media exposure and prepare reports summarizing impact of district’s communications efforts.
  • Update databases, media lists, and provide other essential administrative support for the communications department.
  • Serve on assigned district committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education or Experience:
  • BA in public relations, communications, or related field, or a combination of education and/or equivalent experience.
  • 1-3 years working experience in communications.

  • Proficient written, editing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with administrators, staff, students, members of the Linn-Mar community as well as community officials, media and the public.
  • Knowledge of professional practices in communications and multimedia production, especially video production, design, website creation and support, and related to social media.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in sensitive and personnel situations in the nature of communications work.
  • Possess great ability to identify potential negative or crisis situations and apply conflict resolution principles to mitigate issues.
  • Convey a confident, positive, professional, and helpful image to employees and the public.
  • Familiarity with publication and design resources, and other electronic platforms for completion of projects including those used for website, photography, design and video production.
